The Food Growers Collective met on Thurs 26th March at Archerfield Walled Garden to discuss Healthy Soils for Food & Nature.
22 people turned up for a tour of the Walled Garden, led by Head Gardener Kerry Lyall, who showed us around their potager, polytunnel to their wildlife garden, to their beautiful compost systems.
Throughout, we discussed how to keep our soils healthy and teaming with life, to nurture nature above ground, as well as food growing. They take their soil health seriously and practice organic husbandry, no dig (since 2022), crop rotation, companion planting, use of green manures/cover crops, permaculture, to mulching and composting.
Archerfield Walled Garden is such a beautiful location and well worth a day out to (access is free!), and their garden shop and cafe is stunning as well – as was their fresh leek soup and homemade scones!
